16 things you must do in Ibiza

A lot of people think that Ibiza is just about the nightlife, but the truth is this incredible island offers a lot more to its visitors. I do not know anyone who has not fallen desperately in love with its magic. It is one of those places that makes you want to come back before you leave. I went there for the first time with my two girlfriends both named Maria, back in June of 2011. I knew right away, I had to move to Ibiza for a season to work, so I did. In this post,  I’ll tell you 16 things you must do if you want to experience the essence of the white island.

1)  On a Sunday go see the sunset in Benirras, where people are playing the drums.

Benirrás - Ibiza

Every Sunday when the sun goes down, the hippies gather together to play the drums at this charming little beach in the north of the island. Treat yourself to a mojito and enjoy the good vibes, authentic music and one of the most beautiful sunsets of Ibiza.

2) Put mud in your body in Aigües Blanques

If you make a left while on the  beach, there is a nudist area, where you can put a natural reddish mud all over body, take a nice dip in the crystal clear waters, and enjoy your new skin soft as silk.

3) Go to Las Dalias hippy market

In this bustling hippy market you can buy handmade clothes and jewelry and all kinds of exotic products. In addition, it also opens some evenings with a variety of theme parties.

4) Eat a bullit de peix, typical dish par excellence in Ibiza

Thinking about this dish makes my mouth water, I miss it a lot! It is a stew made with fish, potatoes and garlic sauce and is scrumptious! They cook an equally delicious rice with the broth that is usually a leftover. Port Balansat  in San Miguel and Can Bigotis restaurants are some of the best places to eat that dish on the island.

5) Take a walk through the streets of Dalt Vila

Dalt Vila is the old town of Ibiza city. I recommend you to get lost in its cobbled streets and white houses, souvenir shops and art galleries. There are a lot of great restaurants in that area. If you go at night, you can have a drink in a pleasant atmosphere.

6) Marvel with Es Vedrà

Numerous myths and legends are attributed to the islet Es Vedrà, from strange energies to UFO sightings. Believe it or not, the truth is that it leaves nobody indifferent! The sunset there is also very beautiful!

7) Go to Sa Pedrera de Cala d’Hort or Atlantis

This dreamscape is one of my favorite spots in Ibiza. In this old quarry, the stones to build Dalt Vila were once extracted. One can find some sculptures carved in stone, natural pools and a cave that was once used to shelter the stonemasons and then housing the hippies that started calling this place Atlantis. Here it’s explained how to get there.

8) Spend a day in Formentera

Formentera is a small island near Ibiza which is only accessible by boat. It is known as the last paradise of the Mediterranean for having managed to combine tourism with environmental protection. In fact, its beach Ses Illetes is considered the 7th most beautiful beach in the world by Trip Advisor users. With only €19 you can go and return with the company Aquabus.

9) Get loose with local beers in Bora Bora

Obviously you can not plan this, but is quite likely that it happens to you… you will go for a little bit to Bora Bora (a beach club) and take it easy and eventually you’ll end up having a crazy day and/or night.

10) Relax in the Spa Na Xamena

I think that seeing the picture, words are unnecessary… Who does not like spas? Well, imagine a spa with these views.

11) Snorkel in the crystal clear waters of Cala Compte, Cala Salada, Cala Bassa or Cala d’Hort

These four beaches are the most beautiful beaches of Ibiza. Its turquoise waters are spectacularly beautiful and all are in the west and southwest of the island.

12) Try the flaó, the greixonera or the orelletes

These three tasty desserts are the most typical of the Pitiusas Islands. You have to try them if you have a chance. Personally, my favourite one is the flaó, I would love to get the recipes for that dessert.

13) Take a shot of homemade hierbas ibicencas

In most of the restaurants on the island, when you finish eating, you are offered a shot of hierbas ibicencas to have a good digestion. It has 26º alcohol proof,  and is totally recommended after a strong food. If the liquor is homemade, much better! one of the best homemade liqueurs of the island is made in the typical Ibizan restaurant Ca n’Anneta in San Carlos.

14) Try the coffee caleta

If you are a coffee drinker, you have to try it! It contains lemon, brandy, cinnamon, sugar and of course, coffee. But only the typical Ibizan grandmother knows the secret of its preparation.

15) Do parasailing in San Antonio

Enjoy the wonderful views of the Bay of San Antonio from over 150 meters. The best time of day to do it is at sunset.

16) Go clubbing

I said that Ibiza is not just party, but of course, it is PARTY! Every single day of the week of the summer season you can watch your favorite DJs in some of the best clubs in the world. If you love electronic music like me, this is your place! In my opinion, the best clubs on the island are AmnesiaUshuaia and the one which was always my favourite, Space, it’s such a pity that 2016 was the last season of the club.

If you want to enjoy Ibiza 100% I recommend you rent a car, it is the only way to see all the wonderful spots of this amazing and magic island. Regarding the accommodation, the best places to stay are Playa d’en Bossa and Ibiza town.

If you are thinking about going to Ibiza this summer, be sure to make these things! and if you have already gone but you didn’t do them, you already have an excuse to go back! 😉
